The Importance of Pedigree Tracking in Animal Breeding

Animal breeding is all about pairing animals to pass on the best traits to the next generation, like good health or particular abilities. A big part of doing this well involves something called pedigree tracking.

A pedigree is basically a family tree for animals. It shows who the animal’s relatives are, going back several generations. This family tree helps breeders see what traits and health conditions might have passed from one generation to the next. Knowing this is important because it helps avoid problems like inbreeding, where closely related animals breed together. This can lead to health issues and weak offspring.

The Basics of Pedigree Tracking

Think of a pedigree like a family tree for animals. It’s a chart that breeders use to keep track of who the parents, grandparents, and even great-grandparents are of an animal. This is really important because it helps breeders understand which qualities or traits—like size, color, or health—might be passed down to their offspring.

To keep track of all this family history, breeders use different tools. Some might use simple notebooks and charts, while others might use special software. These programs can hold a lot of information and help breeders see patterns or predict what traits future animals might have. It’s like having a big, detailed map that shows you where different traits come from and how they might show up in new puppies, kittens, or hedgehogs.

Why Track Pedigrees?

Tracking pedigrees, or family trees, is vital in animal breeding for several reasons:

  1. Keeping Animals Healthy: A pedigree shows what health issues might be common in an animal’s family. Breeders can use this information to avoid breeding animals that might pass on bad health traits to their babies.
  2. Avoiding Inbreeding: Inbreeding, where close relatives breed, can lead to health problems and weak animals. By looking at the pedigree, breeders can make sure they choose mates for their animals that are not too closely related, helping to keep the breed strong and healthy.
  3. Improving Animal Traits: Pedigrees help breeders see which good qualities (like a friendly nature or strong build) are passed down through families. This helps them pick the best animals to breed together to get puppies, kittens, or other baby animals with those good qualities.
  4. Keeping Track of Bloodlines: For some animals, especially those that are rare or have a special heritage, it’s important to keep their family lines pure and well-documented. Pedigrees help make sure that the history and special characteristics of these animals are not lost over time.
  5. Building Trust with Buyers: When breeders can show a clear pedigree, it tells buyers that they know the animal’s background well and that they breed responsibly. This builds trust and can even increase the animal’s value.
  6. Following the Rules: In some places, the law requires breeders to keep detailed records of their animals’ family trees. This helps make sure that animals are bred safely and ethically.

Overall, keeping track of pedigrees helps breeders make smart choices that are good for the animals and good for those buying them. It’s a key part of being a responsible breeder.

Pedigree Tracking Software

Our software, Imperium, makes it easy to manage and track animal pedigrees by doing much of the work for you. Here’s a simple guide on how it works:

1. Adding Animals

Add animals to imperium pedigree tracking

To add a new animal to the system, click on the “add animal icon” in the upper right corner of the navigation bar or use the “Add Animal” button at the top of the animal list.

You’ll need to enter some important details about the animal, like its breed, name, gender, sex, and the breeder’s name. This helps the software create a precise family tree for each animal.

2. Creating Pedigree Charts

After you add an animal, our software automatically creates a pedigree chart for it. To see this chart, just type the animal’s name in the search box on the upper left side of the screen.

This takes you to the pet’s profile page, where you can view its family tree, showing you parents, grandparents, and more, depending on the information available.

3. Editing Pedigree Charts

If you need to add parents to an animal’s chart, click on the “+” symbol in any empty slot in the chart. If the parent is already in the database, you can find them by name. If not, you can add a new animal by clicking the “New” tab.

To change details about an animal in the chart, like swapping out one parent for another or removing an animal, hover your mouse over the animal’s name. An edit icon will appear, and you can click it to make your changes.
